Meet Agnes, a veteran youth of TCO

TCO: How long have you been with the TCO?
A: I have been with TCO for 5 to 6 years.

TCO: What keeps you coming back?
A: The family-like members TCO, and my father and my siblings who are also in the orchestra makes every rehearsal so welcoming and fun! TCO definitely provided me with the many unforgettable opportunities to travel in different places and for different audiences. Also, my passion for playing the cello and learning not only western but the chinese styles of music keeps me coming back.

TCO: What instrument do you play and how long have you been playing?
A: I play the cello and began learning since I was 8 years old… so I’ve been playing for about 11 years.

TCO: How did you get started with this instrument?
A: I remember watching an orchestra play on TV when I first migrated back to Canada from Hong Kong while sitting with my sister and father. My father asked us if we would like to learn an instrument as a hobby or if we might like to try any of the instruments we’re watching and hearing. I think I found the violin too small, the bass way too big, the viola not much different from the violin, and the cello AWESOME. Maybe it wasn’t exactly like so, but the cello’s unique sound, pitch range, and shape. I started lessons weekly with my sister, Jaimie (who is the bassist of TCO) and have been learning from Yang Da Jing ever since.

TCO: What other instruments do you play?
A: I like jamming on the electric bass and guitar.

TCO: Other activities that you enjoy on spare time?
A: Drawing/painting, jogging, volunteering, reading, and listening to music.

TCO: Anything you’d like to share with other TCO members and fans that come to the concerts?
A: I whole-heartedly thank every one of the members of TCO, my father (who got me started), and of course our conductor Karl Pang for his insightful and fun conducting. TCO members are like my second family. They have watched me grow, progress, throw tantrums, and mature these past years. I never could have had so much fun and succeeded thus far without all of you! Thank you for supporting this little cellist every Friday night and I hope we will continue to make beautiful music together! To all the fans who attend our concerts, thank you for creating the opportunity for us to perform because your presence motivates us dearly!
